Saturday September 10

It’s time to do our epic Kaena Point paddle again . If surf conditions are down (which they should be, we’ll also stop at Kaena Pt. for our ½ way stop (this is NOT a drop off/pick up point!) and chances are good we’ll see some Monk Seals, and Iwa’s (Albatross) that are now nesting in the sanctuary there.

This route truly is a unique experience that paddlers rarely get to do because of the logistical difficulty involved in the car shuttle. Normally, we’d meet at Mokuleia to offload the kayaks, then drive our cars to the finish point at Yokohama Beach and leave them there. Then some “shuttle” drivers would drive us back to Mokuleia and the kayaks. After the paddle, some unlucky soul(s) would have to drive the “shuttle” drivers BACK to Mokuleia to get their cars. For these lucky people it would mean driving 120 miles to do a 6.5 mile paddle!!!

To make the shuttle much easier we are planning to bring our Twogood Kayaks 14 Passenger van and kayak trailer to haul people & kayaks from Yokohama Beach Park to the starting point at Mokuleia Beach Park. Doing this will allow most paddlers (those that use the shuttle) to have their car at the finish point WITHOUT having to do that hellacious 120 mile round trip shuttle from Mokuleia to Yokohama and back BEFORE we even start the paddle. By doing this, we should save 2 ½ hours of shuttle time and considerable gas ( when you consider how many vehicles won’t have to make that drive) over our normal shuttle. Our trailer will hold 20 kayaks(singles and Tandems) and the van will carry 14 passengers. If the number of paddlers warrant it, we might need another van to help transport people. So, if you have a vehicle that will fit 5 or more passengers and a friend or spouse that would like to enjoy a scenic drive and make a little money doing it, call our store and we’ll set up a list of possible additional drivers.

To do this shuttle, we’ll need to cover gas and staff cost for 2 or more vehicles. The trailer has a capacity for more boats than the van does for people. So, to try to make this work out, there will be a $20 per person fee for those that want to take advantage of the Van plus kayak shuttle, and a $15/boat only fee to use the trailer shuttle. Not such a bad deal when you consider that you’ll burn at least that much in gas if you drive your own car (and we all save the drive time from Mokuleia to Yokohama that we WON’T have to do).

At this stage, we don’t know how many people will be doing this paddle(although last time we had around 20 people), and the shuttle option will only work if we get at least 8 people using the van and 11 boats on the trailer. If we have less than that signing up, we’ll just have to do the shuttle without the van and trailer.

There are a limited number of seats in the van, and they’ll be assigned on a first come-first served basis. So, If you would like to take advantage of this shuttle offer, please call Twogood Kayaks, at 262-5656 ASAP to let us know you’ll be using the shuttle, how many boats you’ll put on the trailer and paddlers in the van. You can make payment with a credit card on the phone, and our staff at the store will put you on the shuttle list. Be sure to call right away as this might fill up pretty quickly and this is a really unique paddle that people rarely get to do!! Also, if you plan to rent your kayak, be sure to ask for the Meetup rental rate and remember, you will have to bring your kayak back to the shop yourself. There will be no kayak pickup at the end of the paddle. If you can't haul it back yourself, check with others who have RSVP ed.

So, here’s the Grand Plan……..

Meet at Yokohama Beach park (end of Farrington Hwy) on the Waianae side of Kaena Pt. near the bathrooms at 7:00 AM. Load kayaks onto boat trailer anddepart at 7:30 AM ----- Please don’t arrive at 7:25 or 7:30 AM and expect all those who came on time to wait while your boat and other gear is loaded. If you leave home 15 minutes earlier than you think you need to, it should be easy to be there on time. This should put us at Mokuleia by 8:30 AM, launching around 9:00 AM and finishing up around 1 PM. Note: Kolekole Pass is not open due to land slides.

We’ll be launching from a beach next to the YMCA camp which is 2.7 miles past Mokuleia Beach Park near the end of Farrington Hwy - Dillingham side, which is around 4 miles from Kaena point. We should have tailwinds for that leg of the trip.

After the break (hopefully) at Kaena Pt., it’s another 3 miles to Yokohama Beach Park and the cars. Considering that the route is only 7 miles, it should be a pleasant paddle.

If conditions are right, we MIGHT be able to land at Kaena Pt., but it’s not something we can depend on, in which case, we’ll be taking our break in the calm water after we round the point. So, remember to bring something easy for a snack and try to have it accessible, along with something to drink, while you are on the kayak, just in case we don’t get to stop at Kaena Pt.

Know your capabilities, limits, the conditions and check your equipment before you go. Sun Screen, hat and water are a must. Sun glasses, gloves and dry bag are a good idea. Remember to stay in sight of the group and tell others if you are leaving. You alone are responsible for your health and safety. To check conditions, go to: http://www.surfnewsnetwork.com/ and check the surf and wind forecast to see what it’s saying at that time. Then, knowing the latest forecast, we can all make the decision about whether to come out for this paddle or to go for a paddle somewhere else, or stay home and clean the yard. Be sure to check the Meetup – Hua Iki site for any changes and updates and to change your RSVP if you change your mind.

Questions, call the Twogood Kayaks store, or on the morning of the paddle, you’ll be able to reach Bob on his cell at 779.2512.

Remember, if you want to use the shuttle, call us at the store ASAP…… but for sure before Friday 9/9/11 at noon. I’ll send out another email on Friday at 2 pm to confirm whether we’ll do the trailer/Van shuttle.

Hua Iki is a loosely organized group of paddlers whose goal is to enjoy Hawaii’s outstanding ocean environment by paddling around our beautiful Island of Oahu.  All kayakers from beginning to intermediate can handle our paddles without undue stress. We’re not formally organized club with officers but rather a group of paddlers who enjoy relaxed recreational outings together.

Our outings are usually in the 6 to 10 mile distance range, and depending on the weather, are usually short enough for most new paddlers to enjoy. (If you are new to the group try to paddle approximately 75% of the distance you will do on your first club outing.  If you can handle that without being extremely exhausted, you will most likely do fine on the club outing - again depending on the weather)

There are no fees to join or to attend the paddles, just show up with your boat and have fun. There are normally a number of experienced paddlers on every outing who do what they can to keep the inexperienced members with the group and out of areas that might be "over their head" in terms of paddling difficulty.

So, if you’re new to kayaking on Oahu and you’re looking for a way to get out with other paddlers and explore our water wonder-land to find places none of your "land locked" friends will ever visit, just contact us via email and your name will go onto the email notification list and you get our notifications of outings about a week before each event.
